Unlikemost horsepeople, Rona didn’t grow up riding horses. Her mother rode and fox hunted a little when she was young, but it wasn’t anything she ever did. Rona grew up in Pennsylvania and went to Kettering College in Ohio. After working as a physician assistant for 10 years, then for the Pharmaceutical Product Development firm, PPD, Inc., doing clinical drug trial monitoring, she took some time off and landed in Wilmington, North Carolina. That’s when she met Kent Kent, the sailor, surfer and real estate developer. “I met Kent through sailing groups, and his marketing director hired me to work a boat show. We worked together for a couple of years, growing quite close.” Kent invited her to Texas for Thanksgiving at his family’s ranch. Wanting to make a good impression, Rona figured she had better know how to ride a horse. So she took her first lesson at 45 years old. “It was 2008 – my first ride. We never did ride on that ranch over Thanksgiving, but I was still hooked,” Rona says. Shortly after that Thanksgiving, Kent bought Rona her first horse – a 5-yearold off-the-trackThoroughbred named Grayce. And, while Kent cruised across the Pacific, Fiji and Central America, she got into racing. Along the way, they invested in a sailboat together. FROMWILMINGTON TOWELLINGTON Rona leaned into her interest with a passion and together they bought five more horses, Warmblook Geldings, as investment jumpers and found themselves a trainer. “In 2012, we went with a trainer who told us about Wellington [Florida], and the plan was to split time between North Carolina and Florida,” Rona says. “In the first year we met Matt Varney, explored properties, and bought at the end of that first season. We didn’t look back.” The property was good for them and the horses at the time. And, during their time there, Kent focused on his real estate development. “We bought a few farms and renovated and sold them.” Matt has been their main contact, providing counsel all along. “We’ve also gone to Grand Prix and other events withMatt, Chris and Rob, and have done other investments with them,” Rona says. The horses competed a bit in Wellington but it was about enjoyment for Rona. In 2016, Kent, who wanted to keep West Coast Surfing in his life and owned land at Hollister Ranch in California, purchased a small ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley with hopes that the couple and their herd of horses would split their time between the two places. “Wellington was 12 acres and California was 70, and while we didn’t come back as much as we thought we would, we always kept in touch with Matt,” Rona says. A few years later, Matt, broker at Ocala Horse Properties andWellington Equestrian Realty, convinced them to look at Ocala. “We met withMatt and made an offer on the property we currently own – but it wasn’t accepted at the time, so we went back to California.” Then, the pandemic hit. Rona Garmand Kent Mitchell finally landed the property they wanted in Ocala, but it took a few significant and inspiring life changes – and a pandemic – to get there. THE TASTE OF A NEWVENTURE When they went back to their ranch in California, Kent developed an interest in wine and, through mutual friends, met the esteemed Steve Clifton of Brewer-Clifton wines. “Together, they went out to various vineyards, tasting and selecting grapes. Kent decided to focus on Rhone Valley and Bordeaux grapes and launched Long Creek Wines,” Rona says. It’s not a bad way to spend a lockdown – tasting grapes and exploring a new life-changing venture. “When we first started, I was helping himwith the marketing, and we named himThe Accidental Winemaker. It was fun and we came out with phenomenal wines.” MOVING THE HERD The couple hadn’t returned toWellington as often as they expected, and there was something about Wellington that just didn’t suit them and their horses. “We started talking more with Matt and the boys and decided to look again at Ocala,” Rona says. “They have good inventory, and they know us really well. They know us personally, they pay close attention, and they honed in on what they knew would be attractive to us. This was a big deal for us.” They say that timing is everything. And this proved to be the case once again for the couple in early Spring 2021. Remember the original property in Ocala that they lost out on a few years earlier? They found themselves making another offer, except this time it worked. “The horses have more land and space, it’s nicer for them. The newWorld Equestrian Center brings in more vibrancy. “We should have done it sooner – should have pursued it more back in 2018. The horses are so much happier here. I’m an amateur rider and have horses that are content and aren’t spooky. They’re happy to go to work and because of the acreage I can go for a nice hack around the property without leaving my fence. I can go uphill, downhill, through the trees,” Rona says. Their new farm in Ocala has a grass dressage ring, a Wordley Martin Arena, and 25-acres with riding hills and a cross country course. “Brooke, our trainer, says we’ll be showing,” Rona says. “But I enjoy the riding fields so much – there’s a breeze in the hills and I spend a lot of time in the barn. Kent and I do evening pony checks. We muck the stalls, hand out treats and take a walk around the property. Kent likes to explore and think about the plantings and the wildlife on the farm.” They also have two pet ducks named Duck-Duck-Goose andThe Tiny Toulouse. Duck-Duck is a white Peking duck who wandered up to their pond on the farm inWellington when he was a duckling. “He never left so we decided he needed a duck friend and got Toulouse, a Cayuga duck, which is an American domestic duck,” she says. “Having the horse community and riders here has been great, andMatt and Kent do real estate development together,” she says. “We’re members at Golden Ocala and we work out, swim and hang out there.” They are ardent supporters of the horse shows and believe that it’s not only important for big companies to support the shows, but the people in the community. “It brings in better riders and service industries and it gives the area some visibility and all of this makes living here a great investment.” Kent aboard a sailboat in Ventura, California. They also have two pet ducks named Duck-Duck-Goose and The Tiny Toulouse. CHRIS AND ROB DESINO As the principles of Ocala Horse Properties, the brothers are from Rochester, New York. Their drive and determination showed early on as the twins were WHY WE’RE THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS top performers in every sport they played. But it was competitive rowing where they first made a mark on the national scene. While attending Hobart College, they were two-time National Collegiate Champions. After graduation, the brothers moved to Philadelphia where they trained and competed for the US National & World Championship Team. Prior to the 2000 Olympics, Rob suffered an unfortunate career ending injury and they turned their focus to another passion — restaurants. Rob and Chris created a chain of very successful restaurants throughout Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse, New York, where they honed their exemplary customer service skills. They believe that restaurants were the best training for having an extreme focus on keeping guests happy. After selling their restaurants, they felt as if the horse farm real estate business was the next natural step and chose Ocala because they both had wintered here with their horses. Chris also spearheads the design and build part of their business. Over the last several years, they have developed, built and renovated some of the most exquisite farms sold in all of Marion County during that time. They also offer their guidance to their clients on the ins and outs of building and renovating farms to today’s standards. OCALA HORSE PROPERTIES was formed in 2007 by twin brothers Chris and Rob Desino. In 2011, Matt Varney joined the team. The OHP Team has led the Ocala farm sales market since 2007, and year after year they are #1 in farm sales representing both sellers and buyers. In addition, they also own Wellington Equestrian Realty and Hudson Phillips Properties and between the three companies, represent the largest portfolio of premier horse properties in the world with the largest marketing budget in the nation. Rob, Chris and Matt are not just selling real estate, they are selling the equestrian lifestyle to those who have dreamt of it their entire lives. There is no other place quite like Ocala in the world, and the OHP team takes great pride at bringing dreams to a reality. As a client you work solely with Rob, Chris and Matt. When you hire the OHP Team, you don’t get just one agent, you get a team that operates as one and with one goal in mind —YOU. who want to just show up after putting their dream to paper with our team, we offer the services of an owner’s representative. Essentially, this is your point person who will handle every detail on your behalf every step of the way until completion. Buyers have confidence in howOHP canmake this happen because Chris and Rob have been building farms since 2007. “We’ve bought and sold hundreds of acres of land and developed homes and farms from the ground up,” Chris says. They have completed 15 farms in Ocala andWellington sine 2008, and over the many years they have perfected their process, gained immense knowledge along with partnerships with those who knowwhat it takes to execute an extensive design and build project. “We know the process intimately and we walk through it with our clients, every step of the way, because this work truly is our passion,” Chris says. In 2016 they took their passion for design and construction work to a new level, expanding their expertise in restoration. “Opening Hudson Phillips Properties in Charleston allowed me to further hone my design and development skills on the most prominent homes in this beautiful and historic area,” Chris says. Chris and Rob took on the most extensive renovations on four historic homes that dated from the 1700s-1800s and pulled in Beau Clowney Architects to help with design. “[Beau Clowney Architects] have an established culture of excellence which underpins everything they do. They deliver valuable and dedicated service to their loyal clients, whether they are buying or selling a home,” Chris says. “With the perfect teams in place, we were able to execute four of the most extensive renovations in Charleston. And each home set a new price-per-square-foot record for homes in Downtown Charleston also known as South of Broad,” he says. How extensive? The four homes were down to the studs, and their teammanaged everything from grading, hardscaping, landscaping, indoor and outdoor renovations – every surface on the properties was refinished. This experience further elevated their skills and knowledge— it’s this level of design intelligence and project management that the OHP team brought back to Ocala in 2017 to continue with their farmdevelopment side of the business. “We elevated our game and we’re elevating the landscape in our beloved Ocala/Marion County—as it so deserves,” Chris says. This is what they love to do, and their work in Charleston gave them the opportunity to bring high-end design and construction back home to the Ocala Horse Country. NEW OFFICE UPDATE! We are also very excited to share that our highlyanticipated new office will finally open in October! We look forward to welcoming you and sharing our newest passion project—a state-of-the-art, modern design center!
