Ocala Horse Properties - 2023 Winter Farm Portfolio

Funky Unicorn Treats An avid FEI dressage competitor and horse farm owner, Renee has been involved with the Ocala equestrian community for more than 20 years. She knows first hand the beautiful, but stubborn nature of our favorite four-legged friends and long wondered if there was an alternative to the sugar cubes so commonly used in the horse community. So, when COVID hit in 2020, and sugar cubes became scarce, Renee found herself at the crossroads of challenge and potential. “It was a hot and miserable season,” Renee remembers. “We were goofing around and started exploring the idea of putting electrolytes in the cubes, and it worked! Then, when sugar cubes became scarce, my daughter, Emily, and I started to think about other alternatives. Could we use less sugar and more electrolytes? Was there another way?” Since then, what began as a fun experiment, has blossomed into a booming business. Designed to keep horses hydrated, Renee’s proprietary product has changed the narrative for horse electrolyte supplements. And it all started in her kitchen. During that summer, and the months following, Renee and Emily poured themselves into product development, trying different homemade formulas and brainstorming business ideas and names. “We both work in the medical field, so we wanted something fun. Whenever you have a really good horse, it’s referred to as a unicorn. So, we knew we had to have the name unicorn in it, and I wanted the funky in it, because I wanted something goofy. It has been such a funny name and it has worked so well. It’s quirky and fun.” OCALAHORSEPROPERTIES.COM | 127 You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink—unless, of course, you’re Renee Genther, who has turned horse hydration into a booming business.
